Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MAUD) K.T. Rama Rao has directed GHMC officials to prepare a calendar for scheduling and determining the plan of action with regard to control of spread of seasonal diseases in the city.

The scheduled activities for each month may be taken up as per the calendar, without waiting for the disease outbreak, he said.

A day after assuming charge of the Ministry, Mr. Rama Rao, along with his Cabinet colleague and Health Minister Eatala Rajender, on Monday conducted a marathon review meeting with the GHMC and Health officials.

Garbage removal

He issued instructions for removal of more than 1,000 garbage vulnerable points in the city, within the coming one week.

Proposal to increase Basti Dawakhanas and Urban Health Centres from the existing 106 to 300 will be presented for Cabinet approval to ensure two neighbourhood clinics per division, he said. A decision has been taken to conduct 25 medical camps at identified high risk localities, and the list of locations will be released soon.

Starting Tuesday, all officials and public representatives right from deputy commissioner up to the corporators should tour their respective localities inspecting the situation and spreading awareness, he said.

They should start the tour at 5 a.m., and conduct at least three awareness meetings, one in college or school, one in a slum and one in colony or apartment complex, visiting households wherever possible. Awareness should be spread about the need to empty containers and air coolers to control the spread of dengue.

Intensify fumigation

Intensity of fumigation and anti larval operations should be increased, Mr.Rama Rao said, and issued instructions to the Deputy Commissioners to ensure cleanliness at Ganesh immersion sites.

Stringent action is being planned against the persons dumping construction and demolition waste in the open, he said, and informed that the C&D waste processing unit at Jeedimetla will be launched next month.

Vehicles will be seized if found carrying boulders without shields, and dumping C&D waste, he warned.

Hygiene check

An action plan should be prepared with regard to maintenance of hygiene by commercial establishments. The Minister has issued orders to the GHMC for recruitment of 15 more entomologists for effective implementation of anti larval operations.

Seeking to assure that dengue is on the wane in the city, he said not all fevers are dengue, as per the reports arriving from corporate and private hospitals.

Source for dengue fever lies at home in 80% of the cases, and citizens are equally responsible for maintenance of hygiene at home and surroundings, Mr.Rama Rao said, and stressed the need to take up widespread awareness campaigns.

Speaking on city roads, Mr. Rama Rao revealed plans to give out annual road maintenance contracts to ensure quality of roads.

A decision towards comprehensive road maintenance will soon be announced, he said.
