An Inter first-year student was gang-raped in Old Mall village in Yacharam of neighbouring Ranga Reddy district, 60 km from here, by four youngsters, the police said on Thursday.

The accused – Chinna, Venkatesh, Shekhar and Vijay, are absconding, Yacharam Inspector J. Madan Mohan Reddy said. The 17-year-old went to relieve herself to the nearby crop fields around 7 p.m. on Wednesday. While walking back home, she was intercepted by the quartet. “According to the victim, all the accused were in an inebriated condition,” the Inspector said. They dragged her to an isolated place and violated her. Following a complaint by her family members, the police registered a case of gang-rape and launched a hunt for the accused.

The four persons were in the age group of 19 to 21 years. They were doing odd jobs. One of them worked for a local band. The police also invoked the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act against the accused.
