A six-month-old infant, Khatija Kubra, was found dead in a well at a house in Bhavaninagar on Wednesday night.
The body of the infant was found in a seven-and-a half feet deep well inside the house.
On Wednesday evening, her mother, Haleema Begum, left Kubra in the cradle and went into another room. She returned within a few minutes and found her missing.
The mother began a frantic search but to no avail.
Half-an-hour later, a relative found the infant in the well and rushed her to a hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead. There are no external injuries on the body.
“The well is about 20 feet away from the room and has a parapet wall. Apparently, someone took the infant and threw her in the water sump while the mother was away,” Bhavaninagar Inspector B. Srinivasa Rao said. The police registered a case under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code.
They suspect the involvement of a woman, a relative of the family, in the murder.
The father of the girl, Mohd Ismail, lives in the house along with three brothers and their families.
