Yet another case of contract marriage came to light in the old city of Hyderabad on Saturday after the police nabbed a Somalian, who was allegedly planning to marry a 22-year-old woman, and three brokers.

The man, Syed Ibrahim (29), of Somalia came to the city last month along with his mother for medical treatment at Apollo Hospital in Jubilee Hills, the police said.

A few days ago, Ibrahim contacted one alleged broker, Mohd Wahab of Falaknuma, and expressed his intention to marry a local girl for a short period of time. The broker, in turn, roped in two women and contacted the family of the woman who hailed from a poor family.

“The mother of the woman agreed to marry her off to Ibrahim after the latter agreed to pay Rs. 80,000 as ‘Meher’ amount. The brokers and the woman’s family agreed to share the amount in 3:1 ratio,” DCP (South) V Satyanarayana said. The marriage was to be performed on Saturday evening.

However, when they approached a qazi to solemnise the marriage, he refused and in turn informed the police about it. Based on his information, the police arrested them. A case has been registered at Falaknuma police station.
