A five-year Comprehensive Road Maintenance (CRM) programme is sought to be projected by the government as an ultimate solution for road-related woes of the Greater Hyderabad residents.

After expressing severe discontent over the road maintenance by the GHMC, Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development K.T. Rama Rao has mooted the proposal of letting the private agencies take care of the city roads on annual maintenance contract.

A committee to finalise the modalities, however, has proposed five-year maintenance, instead of the annual maintenance, which was cleared by the Standing Committee.

Contracting the road work out in large chunks at zonal level is offered as a solution owing to coordination challenges encountered by various wings. As per the CRM programme, a total of 709 kilometres would be handed over to private agencies for maintenance. All major roads would be divided into eight units, and tenders would be called for a term of five years.

From laying of roads to repairs, from building footpaths to cleaning and greenery, the agency winning the bid would be responsible for complete maintenance of the roads.

Prior permission

The agencies that need to dig the roads for laying various utilities would have to take permissions at least six months in advance, so as to maintain road infrastructure and work standards, a press statement informed.

Constant monitoring of the quality of work done by the agencies would be taken up by the GHMC, it said.
