Gold worth ₹ 26 lakh seized at RGIA

An attempt to smuggle 574 grams of foreign-origin gold, worth ₹ 19.63 lakh was thwarted by the Air Intelligence Unit of Customs Department at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport here on Monday.

The passenger, who arrived at RGIA from Abu Dhabi concealed the gold in a juicer, a bluetooth speaker, watch dial and a bangle. “The yellow metal was coated with silver,” Customs officials said.

In another case, the AIU detained a Sudan national and recovered 193 grams of gold. The gold, which is valued of ₹6.58 lakh was hidden in the undergarments of Hiraa Mohammad Osman Abashar, who arrived at RGIA from Dubai via Kuwait on Sunday.

Meanwhile, sources at RGIA said that a consignment of gold in huge quantity was stopped at the cargo unit due to suspected tax evasion.
