Giving up the subsidy on a cylinder of liquid petroleum gas (LPG) will cost a person just about Rs. 150 a month. This, in turn, will help light up the gas stove in the kitchen of a common man. An estimated 16 lakh households in the State of Telangana do not have the luxury of an LPG gas stove in their kitchens.

This is the essence of the campaign launched by oil companies across India, following the appeal by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, asking people who can afford to, to ‘Give it up’, so that it can be used to provide LPG to the have-nots.

Across India, of an estimated 16 crore LPG consumers, 5,80,155 had given up their subsidy thus far.

VIPs lead the way

Among VIPs who have given up the subsidy and find a place in the oil companies’ ‘Scroll of Honour’ are MPs Kalvakunta Kavita and K.V.P. Ramchander (Rajya Sabha), media baron Ramoji Rao, Telangana Finance Minister Etala Rajender, Andhra Pradesh Civil Supplies Minister Paritala Sunita, Bharatiya Janata Party MLA G. Kishan Reddy and Telugu Desam leader Motukupalli Narasimhulu.

At a press conference here on Monday, the State-level Oil Coordinator Ch. Srinivas, who is the Chief Regional Manager-Retail for Hindustan Petroleum Corporation (HPC) said that of the estimated 70 lakh active LPG consumers in Telangana, 10,285 people had surrendered their subsidy following the appeal by Prime Minister. In neighbouring State Andhra Pradesh, the figure was 6,670 of a total of 90 lakh consumers.

Asked for details, HPC’s Chief Regional Manager-LPG, M.B. Ingole said while 3,194 people had given up their subsidy in Hyderabad, the figure was 2,566 in Ranga Reddy district.
