Journalists should pay more attention to the voices of the people rather than VIPs, and that was the only way to ensure journalistic credibility, former MLC and senior journalist K. Nageshwar said here on Tuesday.

But unfortunately, in the present scenario, more importance was being given to the latter, he observed.

Addressing a batch of reporters as part of Vartalap, a media workshop by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), here on Tuesday, Mr. Nageshwar stressed that the media persons should have more awareness of the subjects that they report on. The State government should also bring in a comprehensive legislation for the welfare of reporters in rural areas, he added.

Additional Director-General, PIB Hyderabad, E. Mariappan, said day-long workshops were being conducted in all the districts in Telangana, and the aim was to talk about the skills required by rural journalists. He went on to explain various initiatives by the PIB, under Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, to disseminate appropriate communication.

‘Embrace technology’

According to head of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at Osmania University, K. Stevenson, a good journalist in the fast-changing mediascape would be the one who embraces technological advances.

“With technology, anyone can post news on social media platforms. Rural reporters should learn and use media technologies,” he said.

Suryapet Joint Collector D. Sanjeeva Reddy said journalists should keep up with times by improving their skill set.

A host of officials from PIB, principal of Rachana Journalism College Revuru Uma Maheswara Rao and others were present at the workshop.
