The English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU) that started as a Central Institute of English in 1958 to train English language teachers, and now a full-fledged university, would celebrate 60 years of its academic excellence on November 16.
Vice-President M. Venkaiah Naidu would be the chief guest for the celebrations where language experts and academic administrators from across the country would participate, EFLU Vice-Chancellor E. Suresh Kumar said.
Explaining the achievements of the university over the years, Suresh Kumar, a professor, said it’s one of the five central universities to have been given autonomy, that allows it to design its own courses and establish its own centres without permission from the University Grants Commission (UGC). The varsity also has the autonomy to recruit renowned professors from across the world. “Two British professors have expressed willingness to teach at EFLU,” he said.
The university has developed an English pronunciation app that can be downloaded on mobile phones for free. The aim is to help the common man learn lessons on pronunciation. It would be useful for students whose medium of instruction is Telugu. “Efforts are on to launch it on November 16.”
Prof. Kumar said the university has been sharing its expertise with various stakeholders. Recently, the Indian defence personnel from College of Air Warfare were given an 80-hour proficiency course in Chinese. It has also been training engineering graduates in Japanese language with several Japanese companies setting up their businesses in TS and A.P.
