Five youngsters, including prime accused Suchith Babu, were taken into custody by Madhapur police on Monday in connection with an accident that resulted in the death of their friend the day before.

In the early hours of Sunday, Suchith Babu, who was in an inebriated condition, raced his Hyundai Accent to overtake a BMW car but ended up hitting an autorickshaw and a sidewalk. As a result, his co-paasenger, M. Sai Vihita (20), a final year engineering student from GITAM University, died on the spot after being thrown out of the vehicle.

Soon after the accident, Suchith Babu and his friends, Rapala Bhagat, Mohammed Afzal, T. Praveen and T. Rahul Reddy, who were in the car fled the spot.

“Suchith Babu was taken into custody from his house in Warangal and others from different parts of the city,” inspector S. Venkat Reddy said.

He said the five consumed liquor, before picking up Vihita from her hostel in Kukatpally. “Around midnight, they reached Madhapur in Afzal’s car and consumed alcohol outside a drive-in restaurant,” he said.

Suchith Babu took to the wheel and tried to race with another car which was moving at over 120 kmph and lost control after hitting an autorickshaw, which he tried to overtake from the left side.
