The craze for United States, as an ideal higher education destination, among the Indian student community went a few notches higher, going by the recent visa trends.

Presently, the US Consulate at Hyderabad stands fourth in the number of student visa applications processed when compared with other US visa centres in the world. In sync with these numbers are the total student visa applications received at the Hyderabad Consulate in the year 2014-15 which jumped to about 50 per cent when compared to 2013-14. Revealing these statistics, Michael Mullins, Consul General, US Consulate General on Wednesday also quoted a recent credible report to share that the number of Indian students in US has gone up from 1.1 lakh in 2013-14 to 1.4 lakh in 2014-15. Mr. Mullins was addressing the media at the inauguration of the ‘University Fair’ organised by US India Education Foundation and EducationUSA. Representatives from 22 universities from the US participated in the event and interacted with the students to brief them on the academic programmes, admission criteria and scholarships related to various UG and PG courses.

Ishrat Jahan, Regional Educational and Advising Coordinator, EducationUSA advised the students to check for accreditation of colleges before zeroing in on them. She said that the counsellors at EducationUSA will also help the students in choosing from a pool of colleges including the government institutes. According to the representatives, Masters in Engineering courses continue to be sought-after for the Indian students.
