If pavements are missing on major roads, that’s because they are encroached upon by plot owners in residential localities. As if this were not enough, the storage space exclusively for construction material is turning to be pavements. Sand, bricks and other construction material are increasingly being dumped on footpaths in several colonies across the city with not much action from the authorities.
For almost a year now, residents of Road No. 5 at West Marredpally have been complaining to the GHMC (Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation) officials to take action against a builder who has been flouting norms by dumping construction material not just on the pavement but also on the road.
Threat to motorists
“I went to the zonal office of the GHMC and complained to them thrice. I even met the officials personally and asked them to penalise or take action against the builder,” said K. Prasad, a local resident.
“Since the construction material has spilled over to the road, motorists face a major accident risk. The entire stretch has turned a death trap owing to the construction activity.”
The Residential Welfare Associations have also objected to the practise in the past.
“There were instances of construction material being dumped in the area and we immediately complained to the GHMC authorities,” said G.V. Rao of GAASA (Greater Alwal Allied Service Association). “While seeking permission for construction, it is a rule that the construction material should not be dumped outside the property. But the rule is not being followed by anyone.”
The GHMC officials, on their part, said they have imposed fine on those violating the rule whenever they have received complaints.
“Sometimes, the local residents request us not to take any action because of their association with the builders. Otherwise, we have been imposing heavy fine and serving notices to the violators,” said a senior official of the civic body.
