Citizens peeved over illegal structures

Issue of illegal constructions dominates GHMC's face-to-face programme

November 06, 2011 11:22 am | Updated 11:28 am IST - HYDERABAD:

Complaints of unauthorised constructions dominated the monthly face-to-face programme of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) here on Saturday. City Mayor Banda Karthika Reddy presided over the programme.

As many as 31 citizens put forward their grievances. Of them, 13 citizens used the telephone to raise their issues while 18 appeared in person.

A senior citizen from West Marredpally, Rajeswara Rao, complained of an illegal construction at Malkajgiri. Even after submitting petitions requesting for action against the wrongdoers, officials failed to act. A letter signed by Congress MP Sarve Satyanarayana was also sent to them but there was no response. “Please do the needful,” he broke down.

The Mayor assured that necessary steps would be taken shortly to curb illegal constructions. Another caller from Ameerpet said a builder constructed a five-storeyed apartment without obtaining mandatory permissions from the corporation. “Despite presenting several petitions, officials did not respond,” he said. In reply, Ms. Reddy promised to act swiftly against the builder.

A caller from Rajendranagar strongly criticised the GHMC for failing to control unauthorised constructions. When Ms. Reddy tried to explain the reasons, he reiterated that the corporation was not concerned about the buildings constructed in violation of norms.

A resident from Purani Haveli requested the Mayor to regularly visit old city to improve civic amenities and appealed to make necessary arrangements for Bakrid and Muharram.

In reply, she said a review meeting was already conducted on Saturday to take steps for improving sanitation on the eve of Bakrid.
