Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao turned the focus on Charminar at a meeting with leaders of minority community on Monday afternoon in the city. The CM said he wanted Charminar area to be developed on the lines of the area around the Golden Temple in Amritsar. The area around Golden Temple had been de-congested by removing encroachments and hawkers on the main thoroughfare. Besides widening the road, it had been made pedestrian-only zone with a massive multi-level parking space.

Later, Hyderabad Member of Parliament Asaduddin Owaisi, who attended the meeting, tweeted: “Must thank @TelanganaCMO for giving directions to @CommissionerGHMC finish Charminar Pedestrianisation project (on) lines of Amritsar.”

Mr. Rao spoke about developing Charminar in a way that people would spend more time at the monument with enough parking facilities and tourist amenities. Currently, the area around Charminar is a messy chaos with the monument serving as a roundabout for traffic with encroachers, hawkers and beggars having a free run.

The Chief Minister ordered commencement of work within three weeks for a Hyderabad International Islamic Cultural Convention Centre on 10 acres of land at Kokapet. He spoke about plying of Metro along the Musi river bank and developing the 42-km stretch along the river on the lines of Sabarmati riverfront in Ahmedabad.
