The Telangana police on Thursday registered a criminal case against AICC general secretary Digvijaya Singh following a complaint on his tweets that the Telangana police hosted a fake ISIS website to radicalise Muslim youth.
The Jubilee Hills police who received a complaint from B. Dinesh Chowdhary and others on Monday, issued the First Information Report (FIR) against the Congress leader who is also in-charge of party’s Telangana wing. They invoked sections 505 (1) (a) and (b) (making statement to cause any officer to mutiny or otherwise disregard or fail in his duty and cause fear or alarm among public) and 505 (2) (making statement causing feelings of enmity, hatred) of Indian Penal Code (IPC) against him.
Controversy over tweets
Mr. Singh’s tweets stirred up controversy as he claimed that the Telangana police hosted a fake website luring Muslim youth towards ISIS. He said the police action was not justified. Even as ruling TRS leaders condemned his remarks and demanded an unconditional apology from him, the Congress leader stuck to his statement saying he had evidence to substantiate his remarks and was ready to go to any extent in the matter.
Two complaints
The Telangana police received two complaints, one in Jubilee Hills and another in One Town police station under Karimnagar Commissionerate, seeking action over his comments. The police officials, however, didn’t register any case immediately. They sought legal opinion on the complaints and issued the FIR on Thursday.
Meanwhile, Mr. Digvijaya Singh has welcomed the case that has been filed against him.
“I am extremely grateful to the TRS government to file a case against me. I will present myself wherever they want me to,” he told a vernacular news channel in Delhi. Asked whether he was planning to approach the court, he said: “Why should I approach the court. Filing an FIR is something which is the initiation of investigation. Let them investigate,” he said.
He said he did not make any remarks aimed at defaming the police. “In fact, I raised the image of the Telangana police,” he said.
