In what would be a big relief to city residents, the water board is all set to supply an additional 45 million gallons per day (MGD) of water from the end of June through the Krishna Phase-III project’s second installation. Currently, less than three kilometres of works remain to be completed at certain places out of the total 35 km., after which pumping to the city will begin in a phased manner, said officials.
“As of now, the ring mains are being laid at Tolichowki, Barkas and near Ramanaidu studios in Jubilee Hills. Once that is completed, we will start supplying about 11.25 MGD of water initially and will increase it in the coming days. Mostly, by June-end the supply will begin,” said a senior Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) official, requesting anonymity.
The official said that a pipeline of 141 meters in total is being laid at Barkas, while another of 2.2 kilometres is being laid at Tolichowki and Ramanaidu Studios. “Once we start supplying 11.25 MGD of water to the city, subject to conditions, it will increase. And subsequently, we will start supplying more water towards areas in Madhapur where there is short supply,” he stated.
Averted summer crisisThe summer crisis in the form of water shortage this year was averted to some extent with the HMWSSB drawing 45 MGD from the Krishna Phase-III project a few months ago. It added to Hyderabad’s regular supply of 340 MGD, which is supplied everyday. With the next phase of the project adding another 45 MGD, periphery areas of the city are expected to receive better supply.
Equal distribution“Our main aim is to reach areas where there is less supply of water and to have equal distribution,” said the official.
He added that the first phase of the Krishna Phase-III project’s supply also helped mitigate the loss of water supply from the Himayatsagar lake, from where emergency pumping had to be done.
