After facing citizens’ ire on Minister for Municipal Administration K.T. Rama Rao’s Twitter account, with regard to the condition of city roads, GHMC, on Tuesday, held an emergency meeting and issued instructions to the officials for immediate repair of damaged roads.
Mayor B. Ram Mohan and Commissioner B. Janardhan Reddy addressed the meeting held with engineers from GHMC and HRDCL. Professors from JNTU and Osmania University too attended as special invitees.
The corporation has discovered a total of 3,141 potholes on the city roads since July 1 this year, of which 771 were filled up, the officials informed. On the 320 km of major roads under the HRDCL, a total of 500 potholes were discovered, of which 439 were filled up, Mr. Ram Mohan and Mr. Reddy informed at a media conference.
The remaining would be filled up in two days, Mr. Ram Mohan assured. In order to address the shortage of hotmix for filling the potholes, three more BT plants are being constructed in Fathullaguda, Yapral and Khairatabad in addition to the existing one in Chudi Bazar. Construction will be started in a week’s time.
Since June 1 last year, up to June 30 this year, more than 50,000 potholes have been filled up, a statement from GHMC informed. Latest instant road repair solutions will be employed in filling up the potholes where the climate is not conducive for the use of ordinary BT. A total of 79 instant repair teams have been deployed for the purpose. However, the roads which have been badly battered, will have to wait till dry weather for repairs to be taken up. The engineers have been asked to conduct inspections with the public representatives and identify the damaged stretches, so that repairs can be taken up.
Hyderabad Metro Rail and HMWSSB have been asked to restore the roads wherever they had taken up digging works. A special action plan will be prepared for addressing the concerns of road digging and potholes, through a special convergence meeting with L&T, Water Board, BSNL and other such stakeholders.
In a separate statement, Mr. Reddy informed that the city has been declared Open Defecation-Free by Swachh Bharat Mission on Monday.
