GHMC has taken a decision to link all the government and private hospitals in the city to the corporation’s website for streamlining the data of births and deaths in the city.

The decision has been taken in view of the hardships citizens are put to with respect to obtaining birth and death certificates owing to the delay in the details reaching the respective GHMC offices.

Inordinate delay

While there are a total 1463 government and private hospitals in the city, only 256 have direct online linkage with GHMC website. With respect to the rest of the hospitals, there is inordinate delay in submission of birth and death details, and some times, they are never shared, a statement from GHMC said.

The 30 GHMC circles in the city have a total of 63 registration units for registering deaths and births.

GHMC will increase the staff and strengthen these units , GHMC will also coordinate with the Medical and Health officials in seeing that the hospitals are registered with GHMC website.

Digitised records

The recording of deaths and births has been on in Hyderabad since 1957. However, after the onset of digitisation, only about 20 lakh birth and death details between 1990 and 2012 have been digitised. After 2012, the registration has been computerised, and certificates with digital signature are being issued via citizen service centres and Mee-Seva centres. Since then, a total of 10.7 lakh birth certificates have been issued through citizen service centres, and 7.79 lakh have been issued through Mee-Seva centres. The death certificates issued through citizen service centres number 1.04 lakh, while those through Mee-Seva centre are at 38,000.

GHMC witnesses about 1.85 lakh births and 45,000 deaths every year on an average.

GHMC app

Birth and death certificates may also be downloaded through ‘My GHMC’ app since June, 2016. So far, over 1.28 lakh birth certificates and 17,747 death certificates have been downloaded through this app.

As a pilot, e-Shishu project was launched in Government Maternity Hospital, Petlaburj, for direct issue of birth certificates at hospital. The facility was later extended to Government Maternity Hospital at Koti and Niloufer Hospital at Red Hills too.
