February 09, 2015 06:10 pm | Updated November 16, 2021 05:53 pm IST - HYDERABAD:

Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee leaders on Monday petitioned the State Human Rights Commission against the alleged attack on the party president Ponnala Lakshmaiah during the padayatra they had taken out protesting move to shift the State Secretariat to Chest Hospital.

A delegation comprising of TPCC vice-president Md. Ali Shabbir, Greater Hyderabad Congress president Danam Nagender, Rajya Sabha MP M.A. Khan, former MP M. Anjan Kumar Yadav and others met the SHRC Chairman seeking action against the officials responsible for attack on Ponnala Lakshmaiah. Subsequently, the SHRC has directed Chief Secretary and Director General of Police to probe into the matter through an Additional DGP and submit a report by February 23.

Speaking to reporters after submitting the petition, Mr. Shabbir and others lashed out at Minster for Roads and Buildings Tummala Nageshwara Rao and Deputy CM Kadiam Srihari and termed them as the betrayers of Telangana.

Mr. Shabbir strongly condemned Tummala's criticism against the Congress Party wherein he questioned the motives of padayatra. “Where was Tummala during the Telangana agitation?” he asked and alleged that he was part Chandrababu Naidu's team which openly opposed statehood for Telangana. While Tummala joined the ruling party four months after the formation of Telangana, Kadiam joined the TRS at the fag end of Telangana movement.

The Congress MLC said that the Cabinet of Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao comprises of a bunch of opportunist politicians who openly opposed formation of Telangana. He said that as many as eight Ministers, including KCR, had served as ministers in Chandrababu Naidu's Cabinet. “The TRS leaders should rewind the tapes to check how their party has accommodated a large group of betrayers in the Government,” he said.
