All administration and academic activities have come to a standstill at the fledgling Satavahana University following the indefinite strike by the contract teachers.

They have been demanding regularisation of services and the students are seeking appointment of a permanent vice chancellor.

The Satavahana University Contract Teachers Welfare Association launched an indefinite strike on February 14 and are staging a dharna. Since that day academic activities had come to a halt in the university as it has few regular staff. Some of them come from Hyderabad and Warangal to the campus once a week.

The University students’ JAC on Monday announced indefinite closure of college demanding the appointment of a regular vice chancellor. The student organizations took out a rally and staged a dharna in front of the main building. Adding to the problems, the university workers, employed in the hostels and other departments, also went on strike demanding regularisation of services.

Exams rescheduled

The university has put off the Pharmacy semester examination following the strike by contract teachers. Now the internal examinations (practical) for science students, scheduled to begin on Tuesday are also likely to be rescheduled.

The university has 58 contract lecturers and only 23 regular staff to conduct classes. The regular teachers, who frequent from Hyderabad and Warangal cities once in week, conduct the classes in a row and go away.

With the teaching and non-teaching staff and students of university going on strike, the campus wore a deserted look and all the colleges were closed on Monday. Even the offices were closed in the administrative block.

Government informed

The University officials said that they had informed the State Government about the prevailing situation following the strike by the contract teachers for the last one week and fresh indefinite closure of all colleges by the students and non-teaching staff. Student leader Janardhan flayed the State Government for delaying the appointment of a vice chancellor and pointed out that it was affecting their academic activities.

He also found fault with the elected representatives from the district for not making any efforts for the appointment of a VC and for the welfare of students.
