A short-spell of strong winds and heavy rain created mayhem in the city on Friday, killing two persons and bringing traffic to a grinding halt in the evening as trees fell on the roads at several places.

Siblings Ahmed bin Ibrahim and Khaleel bin Ibrahim were occupied observing their mother’s 40{+t}{+h}death anniversary at Jahangirnagar of Bhavaninagar in old city, when strong winds started blowing around 5 p.m. The winds uprooted a tin-sheet roofed shed erected on the terrace of an adjacent three-floor building, along with the steel anglers.

“Hit by the tin-sheets and anglers, the water tank beside it broke and fell on the house of the two brothers,” West zone DCP V. Satyanarayana said. Fortunately, many of their friends and relatives had already left having attended the ceremony by that time. Else, the casualties could have been more, the police said.

Death was instant for 32-year-old Ahmed, while his elder brother Khaleel suffered critical wounds. The latter was rushed to Osmania General Hospital for treatment.

Labourer dead

A construction labourer, Yellaiah, 32, died when an old compound wall of a building collapsed on him at Tejaswininagar of Attapur in Rajendranagar. The victim, hailing from Mahbubnagar district, came to city for livelihood. He was working at a construction site. As rain started, he walked up to the wall so as not to get drenched. The wall suddenly caved in. Death was instant for him too, Rajendranagar Inspector V. Umender said.

Two children were critically injured when the wall of a newly-constructed building collapsed at Chatrinaka in old city. The wall fell on a tin-sheet roofed house. Six-month-old boy Rudrakhya and eight-year-old girl Indu sustained multiple wounds. They were shifted to a private hospital in Abids.

Traffic woes

Traffic went for a toss for hours in several parts of the city due to the rain. While uprooted trees and poles held up traffic on trunk routes, vehicles got damaged at several places as trees and hoardings fell on them.

Nearly eight cars were extensively damaged when a massive uni-pole got uprooted and fell with deafening noise near Jubilee Hills checkpost. Fortunately, nobody was inside any of these cars parked on the roadside. Another car was crushed after the compound wall of a building caved in at Banjara Hills. Traffic went haywire even on the main road inside the Agriculture University in Rajendranagar, as a number of tree branches and trees fell on the roads.
