In a significant development senior most professor Dr. Vipin Srivastava, who was acting Vice-Chancellor of University of Hyderabad proceeded on leave with effect from Friday afternoon.
A university communique issued by the Registrar's office said next senior most professor Dr. M.Periasamy shall perform the duties of the vice-chancellor of the university till further orders in terms of the Statute 1A (7) of the University.
It was on January 24 that Prof Vipin Srivastava had assumed charge as interim VC after the > incumbent Prof P.Appa Rao went on leave.
The UoH campus is on boil following the > suicide of Dalit research scholar Rohith Vemula on January 17. Protesting students have demanded the sacking of the Vice-Chancellor Appa Rao and others and strongly opposed the appointment of Prof Srivastava as the incharge VC on the grounds that he was the chairman of the committee which recommended suspension of five Dalit students. Earlier too had faced allegations that he had harassed a Dalit student from Tamilnadu Senthil Kumar, a research scholar, who committed suicide in 2008.
The latest appointee Prof Periasamy, a native of Srivilliputtur in Tamilnadu after his early education did Ph.D in Organic Chemistry from IISc, Bengaluru and went on to complete is post-doctoral stint at Purdue University and joined the School of Chemistry at the University of Hyderabad.
