The electrification of 12.6 km long Sitaphalmandi- Malkajgiri- Moula Ali railway section is nearing completion, raising hopes of decongesting the rail traffic at Secunderabad station.
The electrification, once completed, would help do away with the current practise of stopping trains at Cherlapally station for a change of over its engine. Currently, a diesel engine would have to be changed to electric traction.
Till such time passengers would have to wait to reach their destination.
Trains heading towards Kacheguda from Kazipet side were forced to stop at Cherlapally for changeover since the Malkajgiri- Moula Ali track joins the mainline only after Moula Ali station.
The change over process not only leads to waiting for passengers, but also was affecting the train traffic on Kacheguda- Kazipet section, said an SCR spokesperson.
Once the electrification is completed the change over of engines at Secunderabad in certain instances also can be avoided.
This would also serve a bypass line to streamline train services for better movement, railway officials said.
The electrification works on the section began some three months ago with an estimated cost of Rs. 4.74 crore. Authorities on Tuesday claimed that the works would be completed in a month, but the section would be commissioned for passenger train traffic around March next.
On the much-awaited electrification of Malkajgiri-Bolarum section, officials said the works are likely to be taken up under the MMTS Phase – II project.
