The total supply of 45 million gallons per day (MGD) of drinking water from Krishna Phase-III project is likely to be allocated to the city from April 15.
The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB), which went for a major shutdown on April 4 to complete works on the project, said half of the targeted supply i.e., 22.5 million gallons a day (MGD) was already being met.
“Works are going on at Kodandapur and once the total 45 MGD is allocated, we can ensure better water supply to areas where there is more demand,” said an official, unwilling to be quoted. He said as Osmansagar lake was giving only 15 MGD instead of the normal 25 MGD water, the supply of 22.5 MGD from the Krishna Phase-III is making up for it.
“Once the remaining 22.5 MGD is supplied, water situation in the city will improve,” the official said. According to the official, about two million gallons of water per day from the project will be supplied to division one, mostly catering to the old city. Alwal and Malkajgiri, where water supply is sparse, will get an additional five million gallons a day, while Uppal and Kapra areas will get four million gallons a day more from the new source.
When contacted, Rameshwar Rao, Director (Technical), HMWSSB, said, “Water supply in Hyderabad will definitely improve after April 15”.
