October 02, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:47 am IST - HYDERABAD:

Deputy Chief Minister Kadiam Srihari, who also holds the portfolio of Education, has stated that 6,488 ‘Vidya’ volunteers selected recently for the current academic year have reported for duty. The process of appointment has been completed based on merit, without giving any scope for corruption.

Mr. Srihari stated that the appointment of education volunteers was taken up after rationalisation of posts, promotions and transfers of teachers by notifying 7,759 posts with an objective that students were not put to loss due to shortage of teachers. He told mediapersons that 7,491 education volunteer posts were filled and 6,488 of them had already reported to duty.

Based on the suggestion of District Collectors the last date for reporting to duty was extended till October 5 so that the remaining 1,003 selected education volunteers could join duty. Including those selected but yet to report to duty, the number of vacancies of education volunteer posts was 1,271, the Deputy Chief Minister noted.

He explained that the State Government has increased the honorarium of education volunteers to Rs. 8,000 per month against Rs. 5,000 earlier. He promised that the government would be willing to appoint education volunteers even after October 5, if any District Collector brings it to the notice of the government that there was shortage of teachers anywhere.

He stated that government was planning to conduct Teachers’ Eligibility Test in January and a decision on conducting DSC also would be taken at an appropriate time.
