42 underage drivers were jailed in 2018

29,484 were booked for drunk driving

Believe it or not, as many as 42 minors were jailed for periods ranging from one day to one month for driving motorbikes or cars in the State capital last year. A staggering 29,484 people, including 191 women, were booked for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Out of the total persons booked for drunk driving, 5,441 were imprisoned. In 2017, as many as 20,811 drunk driving cases were booked, out of which 4,015 traffic violators were convicted and driving licences of 203 tipplers were suspended.

Licences cancelled

Last year, 184 licences have been cancelled permanently, a total of 1,235 driving licences have been suspended for a period ranging from three months to 10 years, said Anil Kumar, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Hyderabad.

The city traffic police filed 27,383 charge-sheets against the drunk drivers and they were produced before the third and fourth Metropolitan Magistrate Courts, Nampally. They were sent to Chanchalguda central prisons.

A fine of ₹ 5.88 crore was collected from the other offenders. In addition to drunk driving offences, 212 were booked for cell phone driving, 401 for driving without licences, 19 for dangerous driving, and 11 autorickshaw drivers violation of motor vehicle act, Mr Kumar said.

409 jailed in Cyberabad

Two young women were among 409 persons, who were awarded imprisonment by a court in Kukatpally for driving under the influence of alcohol on New Year eve.

A total of 597 drunk driving cases were booked by Cyberabad Traffic police on December 31, said Cyberabad Traffic DCP S.M. Vijay Kumar.

They were caught in the limits of Madhapur, Gachibowli, Miyapur, Kukatpally and Balanagar Traffic police stations, he said.

“As many as 147 persons caught in Madhapur area were sent to jail, followed 79 in Kukatpally area and 72 in Gachibowli,” he said. The court awarded 25 days of jail term to a person.
