38 jailed for drunken driving

A local court on Friday awarded 38 persons jail terms ranging from one day to a fortnight after they were caught by the police, driving vehicles in a drunken condition during the weekly special drives held in the last week of May.

While one person was sentenced to jail for a fortnight, nine were given one-day jail term. Eighteen others were imprisoned till the rising of the court. Fine up to Rs. 2,000 was imposed on all of them.

More than 300 cases of drunken driving were registered during the special drive conducted on May 27, 28 and 30, according to a press release.

Three held for stealing laptop

The SR Nagar police on Friday recovered 17 stolen laptops and two mobile phones, all worth Rs. 3 lakh, by arresting three persons.

The accused, Mohammed Javeed (31), N. Rajasekhar (24), and M. Krishna (29), used to steal the laptops from the men’s hostels located in and around S.R. Nagar.

When the inmates of the hostels were asleep, the accused would go inside and escape with the laptops, Punjagutta ACP Venkateshwarlu said.
