The Commissioner’s Task Force on Wednesday nabbed a four-member gang, three of whom are police constables, who were allegedly behind a Rs.50 lakh heist last week.
Police Commissioner Anurag Sharma said constables G. Mahender (24) of Begumbazaar police station, Y. Sachin (24) of Chikkadpally Traffic Police Station and C. Purushotham (27) of Chaderghat Police Station conspired with one Thakur Kranthi Singh (31) of Goshamahal and robbed Rs.50 lakh from two persons on Road No.12, Banjara Hills on October 21.
Singh had earlier worked as collection boy for a steel firm, during which he gained familiarity with hawala transactions.
Though he left the job five months ago, he was well aware of money laundering centres in the city. He had even helped police intercept hawala amo-unt of Rs.30 lakh in August.
Mahender, who was then part of the special team, hatched a plan to impersonate the Task Force police and rob hawala money, as he was confident that no complaint would be lodged about loss of illegally transported money. On the day of the crime, Thakur took the three constables to Savitri Steels in Ahuja Complex, where they noticed two persons – Kondal Rao and Suresh – coming out with a bag. Purushotham and Mahender followed the duo, and intercepted them at Banjara Hills, and posing as Task Force policemen seized the bag containing Rs.50 lakh.
Commissioner’s Task Force with help from Banjara Hills police, apprehended Singh, leading to the arrest of the others.
They recovered Rs.48 lakh from the accused, apart from two motorcycles and one mobile phone belonging to Suresh.
