A static surveillance team of the Nalgonda police has seized ₹ 2.92 lakh unaccounted cash at the Korlapahad toll plaza on the NH 65 here on Friday.

At about 10 a.m., the police team at the Korlapahad-Kethepally check post stopped a car carrying a footwear businessman from Vijayawada going to Hyderabad, Nagoor Pasha, who was carrying cash but could not account for its source, the police said. The cash was seized and a panchanama recorded by revenue and police authorities.

Nalgonda Superintendent of Police A.V. Ranganath later speaking with the press said that while the model code of conduct for elections is in force, no one is allowed to carry not more than ₹ 50,000.

Cash limit

“In cases of emergencies general public should take prior permission from Returning Officers in the constituencies, if they want to carry a larger amount,” he explained.

Once unaccounted for cash is seized by the police, it is difficult to transfer it and one would have to follow a detailed procedure to get it released, he added.

Check points set up

Mr. Ranganath said four teams were strategically placed at inter-district zones — Kethepally-Korlapahad, Chityala-Gundrampally, Devarakonda-Chinthapally and Miryalaguda-Allagadapa — for surveillance.

And since Nalgonda shares border with Andhra Pradesh, another two inter-district/state check posts have been set up — one each at Vadapally and Peddavoora. All teams are being fixed with CCTV cameras, integrated with the command centre at district headquarters, he said.

Law and Order situation too is being monitored. Of the total 1628 polling stations, 404 poll have been categorised as critical. Mr. Ranganath said all licenses of arms were scrutinised and the total 257 firearms, excepting 21 belonging to banks, have been deposited with the police.

Pending non-bailable arrest warrants and binding over of history-sheeters is in progress, the SP said.
