Indian languages will finally get their due in the web world. Starting August 27, Indian domain names will make their debut with the extension .Bharat which will be in Devanagari script. At the World Domain Day 2014, Govind, CEO, NIXI (National Internet Exchange of India) and Chairman of .IN registry said that this initiative was a step towards a multi-lingual Internet to connect people in every corner of the country.
“The domain names ending with .Bharat in Devanagri script cover Indian languages like Boro, Hindi, Dogri, Konkani, Maithalai, Marathi, Nepali and Sindhi. For example, Nixi.bharat will be in Hindi language. Soon it will be followed by domain names in other languages including Bengali, Telugu, Gujarati, Urdu, Tamil and Punjabi.”
He added that NIXI was working towards promoting Internet in rural areas. “Internet governance is coming up in a big way and we need to have a multi-stake holder approach for issues pertaining to public policy and critical Internet resources,” he said.
