Deputy Commissioner of Prohibition and Excise, Hyderabad, M.M.A. Farooqui, feels that curbing sale of Illicitly Distilled (ID) liquor in the city is quite possible with public support. “Along with the efforts of our department, we require public support,” the official said.
He explained that a year ago the residents of R.N. Colony in Falaknuma formed basthi committees and prevented the sale of ID liquor, complaining of regular nuisance. “We cooperated with them and they succeeded in the attempt. For the last one year, no ID liquor outlet has restarted in the neighbourhood,” Mr. Farooqui said.
There are about 50 ID liquor sale points in the city. Although the police and P&E teams raid, seize the material and arrest those involved in sale and supply of gudamba , the nuisance has not declined.
Gudumba is distilled in few pockets of Dhoolpet and supplied across the city. Of late, the bootleggers are now sourcing it from Amangal and Kartal of Mahbubnagar district. The ID liquor is transported in autorickshaws, cars and scooters to different sale points by transporters who are paid between Rs.200 and Rs.1,000 for each trip.
