Woman ‘jumps off flat’ over property dispute

A 35-year-old woman allegedly jumped off the fifth floor of her flat in south Delhi’s Vasant Kunj on Thursday evening over an alleged property dispute with her in-laws. The woman is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital but is said to be critical.

Around 5 p.m., Bhupenderi Mehlawat, a resident of Kishangarh whose husband Sanjeev passed away in 2014, allegedly took the extreme step after she was allegedly brutally beaten up by her sisters in-law for allegedly suspecting that Ms. Mehlawat will get their parents’ property transferred in her name.

Ms. Mehlawat’s sister Savitri (41) told The Hindu that her three sisters in-law — Kiran, Usha and Sudesh — fought with her on Thursday morning but the matter was resolved.

‘Beaten up’

Ms. Savitri said, according to Ms. Mehlawat’s 15-year-old son Deepanshu, she was beaten up by the three women on the fourth floor of the flat. “They had recently constructed two floors in their house, making it a total of four floors. The three women want one floor each to themselves and one for the parents. They don’t care about my sister or her children,” she said.

While her in-laws claim she jumped off the fifth floor, her sister alleged she had been pushed. “She did not fall face down. Also, she wasn’t someone who could commit suicide, I think she was pushed down,” she said.

“She was being harassed by her sisters in-law over property and money. We have started investigating,” said Additional DCP (South) Chinmoy Biswal
