A 21-year-old woman allegedly hanged herself at her residence in Anand Vihar on Sunday. The woman’s family has claimed that she was tortured for dowry by her husband and in-laws, the police said.

According to the police, the deceased, Dipali, was in love with Ajay, a resident of Jhilmil. The two got married against the wishes of Ajay’s family on January 1. Though Ajay’s family members allowed the couple to stay in the house, they allegedly demanded dowry from Dipali’s mother, a house help.

When Dipali’s mother could not meet the dowry demand, Ajay allegedly started abusing and beating Dipali and on January 13 she returned to her mother’s house, the police said. The next afternoon, when her mother went for work, Dipali allegedly committed suicide, the police added. No suicide note was found in the house.

The police said inquest proceedings and magisterial inquiry have been initiated in the case.
