Woman dies after being hit by SUV in CP

Deceased remains unidentified

A 58-year-old woman died after she was hit by an SUV in Connaught Place on Monday night. The accused driver has been arrested, police said.

A senior officer said the accused has been identified as Sukhbir Parmar, a resident of Gurugram who works with a private firm. Police claimed that the driver was not under the influence of alcohol.

Suspect to be vagabond

According to the police, the incident happened around 11p.m. when the unidentified woman, suspected to be a vagabond, was crossing the road near Gurudwara Bangla Saheb.

“The car hit her and the driver stopped immediately. The patrolling team reached the spot and they made a PCR call,” the officer said. The woman was rushed to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital where the doctors declared her brought dead. The driver was arrested from the accident spot, said the officer

During investigation, police said, the woman remained unidentified as no identity proof was found in her possession. Locals claimed that she used to beg in the area.

The accused driver allegedly told police that he was on his way to receive his relatives from the New Delhi Railway Station when the woman came in front of the vehicle.

Police have registered a case under Section 279 (rash driving) and 304A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code and said that further investigation is under way.
