As Delhi Public School in Ghaziabad celebrated their student being the topper in the CBSE Class XII board examinations, there was celebration of a different kind in another part of the city.
Vaibhavi Singh, a child with special needs, who was denied admission by one of the branches of Delhi Public School around two years ago, celebrated with her family after she scored 98.24% in the exam.
Nervous about result
Vaibhavi was very nervous about her result. “She is hardworking and self-motivated. She had scored high marks without any tuition. We were always concerned about her future but she has proved that nothing can stop her from moving ahead,” said Vaibhavi’s mother Ranita Singh.
Ms. Singh said that Vaibhavi will opt for Delhi University and will prepare for civil services as she wants to become an IAS officer. Her father Amrendra Singh is a senior government official posted in Agra.
Narrating the struggle of her daughter in getting admission in +DPS school in 2017, Ms. Singh said the family still remembers the mental trauma they have gone through when the principal refused admission to their daughter just because she is a special child.
“Vaibhavi is a premature child and she has balancing problem but it never affected her studies. After completing Class X from Silverline School, we tried to enrol her in DPS in 2017 but the school disrespected her by making her realise that she is not like any other child,” said Ms. Singh.
Cleared entrance test
Vaibhavi cleared the entrance test and got shortlisted. But when the school principal called her for the interview, she refused her admission citing that she is a special child.
“When DPS refused to enrol her, we got her admitted in Cambridge School in Indirapuram. She attended the school regularly and now my daughter has scored good marks,” added Ms. Singh.
