Family of the police officer who allegedly shot himself fatally on Wednesday evening demanded a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation into the alleged suicide.

In a complaint addressed to the Delhi Police Commissioner, the wife of deceased inspector Kaushal Gangoli accused a senior IPS officer from south-east district of mentally harassing her husband. The complaint by Lovely Gangoli read: “We belong to the SC/ST community and the officer used racist and derogatory words like chuda , chamar and bhangi for my husband.”

Complaint submitted

Mr. Gangoli’s brother Surinder, a government official, submitted the complaint to the Station House Officer of Chittaranjan Park police station late on Friday night.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (south-east) Romil Baaniya said, “The family of the deceased officer submitted a written complaint at Chittaranjan Park police station. We will initiate a probe based on the complaint.”

A senior officer monitoring the case told The Hindu that the district police weren’t aware of Mr. Gangoli’s caste. “We were under the impression that he was Bengali since Gangulys are generally from West Bengal. The Delhi Police have never worked on religious and casteist lines...,” he said.

Ms. Gangoli’s complaint added that she refused to believe her husband had committed suicide. “If he had done so, he would have at least left a suicide note,” she wrote.

The officer said, “Preliminary investigation suggests it was suicide.”

‘He was depressed’

He added that Mr. Gangoli was allegedly depressed. “From what we have learnt based on the conversation he had with his colleagues, he couldn’t take the pressure of handling case files,” the officer said.

Ms. Gangoli has urged the Police Commissioner to register a case against the IPS officer for “provocation which lead to my husband’s death”.

The deceased, who was stationed at C.R. Park police station, allegedly shot himself in the washroom on the first floor of the building on Wednesday. He was rushed to a hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.
