Reacting to the BJP’s ‘Main Bhi Chowkidar’ campaign, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener Arvind Kejriwal said on Wednesday that people should vote for Prime Minister Narendra Modi if they want their children to become chowkidars or watchmen.

BJP leaders, including Mr. Modi, have been using the prefix chowkidar in their Twitter handles as a part of the campaign.

Mr. Kejriwal said in a tweet in Hindi that Mr. Modi wanted the whole country to become chowkidars. He added that if people want their children to become chowkidars, then they should vote for Mr. Modi, but, if they want to provide good education to their children and want them to become doctors, engineers or lawyers, then they should vote for AAP.

AAP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh also hit out at Mr. Modi, asking what kind of a watchman would allow businessmen Nirav Modi, Mehul Choksi, Vijay Mallya and Lalit Modi to leave the country after defaulting on loans worth hundreds of crores.

He added that when an eight-year-old girl was raped and murdered in Kathua, the BJP government’s Ministers carried out a rally in support of the accused, while another Minister had garlanded the accused in a lynching case elsewhere. He asked whether the BJP were “chowkidars or purveyors of hate”.
