The Union government has started filling up vacancies in the Central Information Commission (CIC). The post of Chief Information Commissioner, which will be vacant after the present incumbent retires on December 1, will also be filled.

The Centre informed the Delhi High Court of the same on Friday during the hearing on an application filed as part of a public interest litigation, which sought filling up of vacancies of Information Commissioners and subordinate CIC staff in a time-bound manner.

The petitioners in the case are RTI activists R.K. Jain, Lokesh Batra and Subhash Chandra Agarwal.

Counsel for the Central government, Jasmeet Singh, said before a Bench of Chief Justice G. Rohini and Justice Rajiv Sahai Endlaw that the pendency of cases in CIC had declined after the recent appointment of an Information Commissioner and the elevation of another as Chief Information Commissioner.
