Unidentified armed men attack family in Gurugram's Bhondsi

Scuffle broke out between groups over playing cricket on the ground; police deny communal angle

More than a dozen unidentified men allegedly armed with weapons, sticks and iron rods attacked a Muslim family in Bhondsi here on Thursday, the police said on Friday. The family claimed that the accused hurled religious slurs at them and told them to go to Pakistan.

Mohmmad Dilshad, 28, a resident of Bhoop Singh Nagar, in his complaint, said that he along with his cousins was playing cricket in a ground near his house when two men came on a motorcycle around 5 p.m.

The two, according to the FIR, began hurling religious slurs at the complainant and his cousins without any provocation and told them to go and play in Pakistan.

When Dilshad’s uncle Sajid intervened, the accused allegedly slapped him. Later, the miscreants left and returned with more friends on two motorcycles. Some of their accomplices were on foot as well.

Dilshad, in the complaint, said the assailants forcibly entered their house and brutally beat them and the women and children in the house. The miscreants threatened them to vacate the house. Some of the injured were taken to a Delhi hospital.

Muslim Ekta Manch chairman Hazi Shahzad Khan said that it was really unfortunate that the Muslims were unsafe even inside their own houses and demanded the immediate arrest of the miscreants. “The victims were too traumatised by the brutal attack to even name the accused. It was following my intervention that they mustered the courage to reveal the names of the attackers. I also spoke to the Commissioner of Police and other senior officers in this connection. They have assured a quick action,” said Mr. Khan.

A case has been registered on charges of attempt to murder, house trespass, causing injuries and criminal intimidation, among others.

Gurugram police spokesperson Subhash Boken said the scuffle broke out between the two groups over playing cricket in the same ground and there was no communal angle to it.
