A new underground reservoir at Kirari that will supply water to 1.25 lakh people was inaugurated by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Friday.

The Delhi Jal Board’s 3.48 MGD reservoir will benefit 42 unauthorised colonies it its first phase. The reservoir and pumping station is part of the DJB’s plan to supply water to unplanned areas. “Around 2,000 residents turned up at the inauguration because they were so happy to get water supply,” said DJB spokesperson Sanjam Chima.

Mr. Gadkari, who has the Drinking Water and Sanitation Ministry among his portfolios, hoped the project would improve living conditions in the area. “It is a matter of great pride that more and more people are being covered under piped water supply network in Delhi,” said the BJP leader.

Accompanying Mr. Gadkari at the inauguration were North-West Delhi MP Dr. Udit Raj, Kirari MLA Anil Jha, Chief Secretary S.K. Srivastava and DJB CEO Vijay Kumar.
