Two members of thak-thak gang in south-west district’s R.K. Puram were arrested late on December 7, the police said on Sunday.

They said the gang was involved in a spate of robberies. They would use slingshots to break the windows of vehicles and flee with money and valuables.

The police said the accused have been identified as Arun Kumar (24) from Meerut and the kingpin, Vinod (34).

Stamp scam

In 2003, Vinod started selling fake stamp papers and was nabbed by the CBI in an FIR related to the Telgi scam. He was also arrested in a rape case.

He formed his own thak-thak gang after coming out of jail and started renting his scooty to recruit persons of the gang for committing crimes.

Tip-off

Acting on a tip-off that the robbers will come to sell stolen items in R.K. Puram, the police laid a trap and the two were nabbed.

“We have recovered 10 stolen mobiles, one laptop, jewellery, two ladies handbags, slingshots and five steel balls with which windows of cars were broken,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (South-West) Devender Arya,

During interrogation, Arun disclosed that he along with his accomplice Rinku used to target vehicles in which bags were kept.

Crowded roads

They used to break the windows with the help of slingshots and steal the bags.

The accused used to target crowded roads near markets and sell the stolen items to Vinod.

The police said Vinod used to provide his own scooty at a daily rent of ₹1,000 for committing thefts.

The police claimed to have solved around two dozen cases with these arrests.
