In what the police are calling a case of road rage, a private tutor and his relative travelling by car were shot and injured after they refused to make way for a motorcyclist late on Wednesday night.

The tutor was hit in his hand and leg while his brother-in-law sustained a bullet wound in his abdomen. The two underwent surgery at a city hospital and are said to be out of danger.

Though the victims were unable to note down the motorcycle’s registration number, they have provided descriptions of the two assailants to the investigators. But police said that they are yet to identify the suspects.

The injured men have been identified as Manmohan Sharma and his brother-in-law Shivam, both natives of UP’s Farukhabad. Sharma has been living in Delhi’s Kotla Mubarakpur for several years and gives tuitions.

At 11.15 p.m. on Wednesday, Sharma, Shivam and another relative Pavan left for Moolchand to have food. Sharma was behind the wheels of his Hyundai i10 car.

While they were near Siri Fort Auditorium on their way back home around midnight, Sharma noticed a motorcyclist repeatedly flashing the ‘dipper’. Sharma claims he was unable to decipher the signal because of which he did not give way.

As soon as he stopped his car at the Archana traffic signal in Greater Kailash area, the motorcyclist got off and menacingly approached them. An argument ensued, during which the motorcyclist allegedly kicked the car and abused him before walking back to his vehicle.

“As soon as the youth got back on his motorcycle, the pillion rider pulled out a pistol and fired several rounds at the car-borne men before speeding away,” he alleged.

Sharma was hit twice while Shivam sustained one bullet injury. According to the victims, a few motorists who witnessed the firing also sped away.

Pavan called the police and the victims were rushed to AIIMS trauma centre.

Police have recovered five empty cartridges from the crime spot and have registered a case of attempt to murder and another under the Arms Act.

Five teams have been formed to identify and nab the assailants.
