Two school dropouts have been arrested for their alleged involvement in around 20 cases of snatching in posh colonies in the Millennium City over the past two months.
The accused have been identified as Babbu Malik (28) and Imran Malik (32).
They were arrested by a team led by Sub-Inspector Sandeep Kumar at the Indira Gandhi International Airport on Thursday, when they had arrived from Pune after committing snatchings. Their accomplice is absconding.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Sumit Kumar said the duo mostly targeted senior citizens on morning walk as they could not offer much resistance. The accused even robbed senior citizens at gun-point.
Army officer robbed
Most of the snatchings were committed in DLF Phase-I, DLF Phase-II, Sushant Lok and Palam Vihar. On January 19, the two had allegedly robbed an elderly Army officer of his gold ring in DLF Phase-II.
“The two have confessed to have committed 20 snatchings in Gurugram, but we believe they are involved in at least 10 more cases,” said Mr. Kumar.
The accused also allegedly travelled to other other cities to commit snatchings.
“After a snatching spree in a city for a fortnight, the two would travel to another city for committing crime. They would travel by air and take along their scooter and motorcycle by train. The accused have committed snatchings in Pune, Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Delhi, and have contact points in these cities,” said Mr. Kumar. The breakthrough in the case came when one of the accused was caught on a CCTV camera while committing a snatching.
They were produced before a local court and remanded in police custody.
