A car being driven at a high speed fell into a drain late on Friday night killing two and injuring three others in East Delhi’s New Ashok Nagar.

The deceased have been identified as siblings Deepak (20) and Pawan (18). Kuldeep (22), Ravish (19), and Sunny (20) sustained injures in the accident. All of them are residents of Trilokpuri in East Delhi.

According to the police, the accident took place around midnight near Dharamshila Cancer Hospital and Research Centre in New Ashok Nagar, when five of them were out on a joyride in their Renault Duster.

“According to eyewitnesses, the car was being driven at a high speed. It first rammed a divider, then an ambulance and finally fell inside the drain,” a police officer said.

The driver of the ambulance was also injured in the incident.

Locals rushed to the spot and called up the police and the fire department. However, by the time help arrived, the brothers had already drowned. Their bodies were later pulled out from the drain. The crowd that gathered at the spot managed to save the other three.

“While the locals were able to pull out Kuldeep, Ravish and Sunny, the other two, who were sitting in front, could not be pulled out in time,” the officer added.

The survivors were later admitted to Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital, where they are being treated.

A case of rash and negligent driving has been registered. However, it has not been ascertained if the occupants were in an inebriated condition at the time of the accident or not.
