A probationary officer at a bank and his younger brother were arrested on Friday from Gurugram for attempting to kill their brother-in-law on Tuesday, the police said.

The bank employee, identified as Neeraj, had joined the gym to bulk up so that he could beat up his brother-in-law, who is a body builder. Mr. Neeraj’s younger brother, Nitin, is a poultry farm manager. The victim had married the sister of the accused persons despite belonging to the same gotra (clan), the police said on Friday.

The police said that a call was received at Uttam Nagar police station on Tuesday from Mata Roop Rani Maggo Hospital regarding a man who had sustained bullet injuries.

The injured person, Bobby, later told the police that around 10 p.m., when he was stepping out of a gym in Lal Chowk area of Uttam Nagar along with his friends, he met an acquaintance and started talking to him. Mr. Bobby said he spotted Mr. Neeraj there, adding that Mr. Nitin then arrived on a motorcycle and pulled out a pistol and fired at the victim. The bullet hit Mr. Bobby in his right hand and he fell on the ground. The brothers started hitting him while shouting “shoot him in the head”. The accused fled the spot after people started gathering.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Rajesh Deo said that a team led by Inspector Ritesh Kumar received an information that the accused were in Gurugram. “The accused were nabbed from a bus stand in Gurugram where they had come to take a bus and leave the city,” said Mr. Deo.

During interrogation, the accused disclosed that their sister had got married to the victim against the wish of their family and the society. “The accused got upset with the victim after the latter allegedly started writing about his marriage with the accused’s sister on the social media, stating that his wife’s family could do no harm,” said a police officer.

The victim’s family also lives in the same village as the accused. After marrying the accused’s sister the victim had left the village and returned after a few months. The accused thought that Mr. Bobby had returned to the village only to throw a challenge to them.

A case was registered against the accused under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code at Uttam Nagar police station.
