Two persons have been arrested for allegedly facilitating an online gambling racket in Shahdara, the police said on Wednesday.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) Amit Sharma said that the accused, Avnit Thapar and Manoj Kumar, are residents of Jagatpuri.

Cricket matches

The police said they recevied a tip-off and conducted a raid at an accommodation in Jagatpuri’s Jitar Nagar. “Avnit was found operating online gambling on cricket matches. A total of 167 phones were also seized from them,” Mr. Sharma said.

During interrogation, Avnit told the police that he was running the racket with his accomplice Manoj alias Kake, who was arrested from Ram Nagar.

The accused also told the police that the 166 phones were connected to each other and received transmissions from only one phone, which is handled by a person at an undisclosed location.

“This person decides the information to be transmitted on all the 166 phones after acquiring information from online gambling sites,” Mr. Sharma said.

Manoj told the police that he received ₹3,000 as rent for each mobile phone. All the phones are basic phones to reduce traceable technical footprint and had only incoming facility. All the financial transaction were done using online platforms, the police said.

Mr Sharma said that an in-depth investigation will be conducted in the matter.
