Two men have been arrested for allegedly carrying out an armed dacoity of ₹3.16 lakh and shooting dead the cashier of Corporation Bank in Dwarka’s Chhawla on Friday.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Dwarka) Anto Alphonse said the accused have been identified as Sachin, 20, and Pravesh, 19, both residents of Haryana’s Sonipat. “A motorcycle, one weapon used in commission of crime and some robbed cash have been recovered from their possession,” Mr. Alphonse said.
Within 7 mins
On Friday afternoon, six armed men entered the bank and fled with the money after shooting cashier Santosh Kumar and injuring security guard Dev Narayan Mahto. The entire incident was caught on CCTV camera and is said to have taken place within 7 minutes.
The police said they have identified other four accused as well and are conducting raids in several places in Haryana to arrest them. Sachin who had allegedly shot at Mr. Kumar was arrested from Murthal. “We are not ruling out the possibility of involvement of others apart from the six who have been identified. CCTV footage played a major role in solving the case along with local intelligence of the team,” said Mr. Alphonse.
Security concerns
Kumar’s 16-year-old son Aryan raised concerns over security arrangements at banks and said that deployment of officers needs to be beefed up.
“There should probably be a panic button or an SOS system. My father served in the Indian Air Force as Junior Warrant Officer and nothing happened to him. He lost his life in the bank job,” he said.
The family said they had celebrated his birthday on October 8 and the son had plans to go buy a new laptop on Saturday. Kumar is survived by his wife Sunaina, daughter Urvashi and son Aryan.
Security guard Mahto recalled how he had asked one of the masked men to remove his mask before entering the bank but within seconds, five more barged in and hit him with the butt of their pistol.
A retired hawaldar from the Army, he said he may not be able to work again because the dacoits took away his double barrel gun which was his personal weapon.
The peon Akhilesh Kumar said that he escaped death because he was just coming out of the washroom near where Kumar was sitting and was shot. He was locked inside the washroom by the accused, he said. “Kumar didn’t say anything to them and didn’t resist; why did they shoot him?” wondered the peon.
