Troll deletes tweets after FIR; police seek details of account

June 12, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:33 am IST - NEW DELHI:

An anonymous Twitter account, @LutyensInsider, which had posted abusive comments to journalist Swati Chaturvedi, changed the name of the handle and deleted all tweets after she filed an FIR.

Ms. Chaturvedi had on Wednesday lodged a complaint with the Delhi Police, who filed a case of stalking against the Twitter user behind the account. On Thursday, the account changed its name twice, settling on @gzackim in the evening. The Delhi Police wrote to the Twitter seeking details of the handle and the possible identity of the accused.

The account, which had earlier described itself as a journalist covering politics, had over 40,000 followers.

“I want this person behind bars. I’m committed to taking this to its logical conclusion. The police have asked the Twitter for access to the account, but it has not been blocked yet,” said Ms. Chaturvedi. A source said the investigation, though at the nascent stage, had revealed the possibility of a Noida-based television journalist being behind the handle.

“We have sought details from the social media site’s representatives in India and have been told that our request will be complied with as soon as they get the approval from the platform’s top management in the U.S.,” a source said.

Meanwhile, Ms. Chaturvedi’s decision to file a case against a Twitter troll seems to have inspired others. Mumbai-based Meena Karnik, the convener of the Aam Aadmi Party’s Maharashtra unit media cell, tweeted that she had reported “abusers” to the Twitter after seeing Ms. Chaturvedi’s action against @LutyensInsider.
