A 12-year-old girl died after a gun-shot injury during celebratory firing at her relative’s wedding in West Delhi’s Ranhola on Wednesday evening. the police said. The victim is believed to have died due to excessive bleeding.

Police said that the groom’s father, Sunil Vats, has been arrested. “We have recovered a licensed pistol from him. However, the process of ascertaining who actually fired the shot is still underway,” said a senior police officer.

The victim has been identified as Divya, a distant relative of the groom, Aman. The incident occurred around 8 p.m. when Divya was dancing close to the horse on which Aman was sitting.

Even as the guests were dancing to drum beats, they heard a gunshot and turned their attention to the source of the shot only to see Divya slumped to the floor and bleeding profusely.

“The girl was taken to Ayushman Hospital in Dwarka. Someone informed the police control room following which a team was sent to inspect the site,” the officer said.

Doctors removed the bullet from her body and tried to revive her, but she had lost too much blood. Transferring her to Mata Chanan Devi Hospital in Janakpuri did not help as she breathed her last at around 4.30 am on Thursday.

Police suspect that Divya's family might have delayed taking the girl to hospital while trying to hush up the matter. They were questioned by the police to ascertain if they knew who fired the shot. They, however, claimed ignorance saying they were not near their daughter at the time of the incident.

“Further investigation revealed that Vats fired the fatal shot and has been arrested under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Arms Act,” the officer added.
