Tihar staffers clash; video goes viral

Duo suspended, while Additional IG (Prisons) assures strict action

February 04, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 07:43 am IST - New Delhi:

A video of two Tihar jail staffers coming to blows in public has stirred a hornets’ nest.

Though no police complaint was registered, Tihar Jail authorities took a serious view of the incident that took place in West Delhi’s Janakpuri on Monday night. The duo was suspended after the video went viral online.

Identified as head warder Anil and warder Digambar, the staffers were posted in the CCTV monitoring section and Jail No. 7 respectively.

The duo was captured in a video thrashing each other inside a Wagon R parked on the roadside in Janakpuri, very close to Tihar Jail. The car had a Tihar Jail sticker and the dashboard carried some files and their khaki caps.

Allegedly under the influence of alcohol, the men punched and bit into each other inside the car even as passers-by recorded the scene.

The presence of the public did not deter them as they took their fight to the street, taking turns to beat each other.

Locals also called the police who arrived at the spot to separate the clashing men and to take them to the police station. However, a compromise was reached between them and they were spared a police complaint.

With the video going viral, the jail authorities had no option but to order an enquiry into the incident and suspend the duo.

“We will ensure strict action against the staffers. Such behaviour is unbecoming of government servants,” said Mukesh Prasad, Additional IG (Prisons).
